Giving hope to those affected
by secondary breast cancer

Hannah McCubbin is one of Make 2nds Count fundraisers, she will be walking 33 miles around Stirling and Bridge of Allan on 13th May 2023. We caught up with Hannah about her fundraising and why she has decided to support Make 2nds Count.
Here is her story:
I am 32 years old and currently live in Stirling. I work as a luxury golf travel consultant for a golf tour operator day to day. Currently Captain of my local ladies rugby team. I enjoy socialising with friends and visiting new places. I have decided to walk 33 miles around Stirling and Bridge of Allan on 13th May to raise money for Make 2nds Count. I am challenging myself to do this as the furthest I have walked previously is 23 miles and I thought what’s an extra 10 in the grand scheme of things. So this will be difficult but nothing in comparison to what people living with cancer go through every day.
If I am honest I had never heard of the charity until recently. My friend Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 at just 31 years old. It was a massive shock for everyone and it made me want to give something back to a charity of her choice. After seeing what she went through, witnessing her incredible strength and still managing to have a smile on her face. She inspired me to do something to raise money for this fantastic cause.
Thankfully when she finally got the all clear at the end of last year I asked her to choose a charity to support with my challenge and she picked Make 2nds Count. So this is my way of keeping my promise to my real life hero Amy and giving something back to all those people who are in need of help.
I am a big believer that sometimes the smaller charities often get overlooked and therefore do not get the same funding as some of the larger charities. The charity's mission of giving hope to those affected by secondary breast cancer and funding medical research is really important in getting closer to a cure.
There is currently a lot of awareness around primary breast cancer but much less awareness of secondary/metastatic cancer. Due to this it means that secondary cancer research is often underfunded and I thought that they would really benefit from fundraising and awareness. However my main reason is that there is currently no cure and therefore people lose their life to this awful disease on a daily basis. If I can even just raise a bit more awareness for this charity and get them the recognition they deserve for the incredible work that they do for people living with secondary breast cancer.
Often overlooked by the bigger charities, I think it is really important to have a charity that is dedicated to secondary breast cancer to educate the wider population on the signs and symptoms of Secondary Breast Cancer. Almost everyone knows of someone close to them that has been affected by cancer and by funding Make 2nds Count it allows them to carry out research and provide invaluable help to people that are affected. Hopefully we can find a cure in the near future as currently 1000 people die per month from Secondary Breast Cancer which I think is a shocking statistic.
