What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as "tapping," is a self-help method that combines elements of cognitive therapy and acupressure to address emotional and physical discomfort. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a specific issue or emotion, aiming to release negative energy and restore balance.

A study published in the Lancet Journal showed that EFT improves the quality of life, distress levels, depressive symptoms, and fatigue in cancer survivors. It was highlighted through an MRI scan that acupuncture tapping can regulate the atomic nervous system and fear response demonstrated in this study. The findings demonstrated that EFT is associated with multidimensional improvements in mental wellbeing and quality of life.

Dr Peta Stapleton, a clinical and health psychologist and world researcher in EFT, explains in this short film how EFT often achieves outcomes in half the time compared to traditional therapies, as it sends activating and deactivating signals to the brain whilst tapping on acupuncture points that are activated by the phrases that we say.

Our EFT Practitioner, Samantha Rich

"I trained in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) over ten years ago and qualified as a therapeutic counsellor three years ago. During this time, I’ve worked with a wide range of clients, including those living with lifelong illness, individuals experiencing grief, and carers supporting terminally ill loved ones—many of whom I’ve supported through my work at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice. I’ve also worked within a secondary school setting, offering support to teenagers and young adults navigating emotional and mental health challenges.

For the past three years, I’ve focused specifically on supporting individuals living with breast cancer.  EFT is a gentle, accessible technique that helps regulate the nervous system, manage anxiety and stress, improve sleep, and guide clients back to a calmer, more grounded state.

I’m passionate about using EFT to offer emotional support through challenging times. My approach is warm, person-centred, and rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a space to feel seen, heard, and supported—wherever they are on their journey."
