CGoodwin Profile Blue

Research has shown that autistic people experience barriers to accessing healthcare including sensory sensitivities to the medical environment and healthcare professionals’ knowledge of autism. What is not yet known is the effect of experiencing healthcare barriers repeatedly when receiving treatment over many months. In this study we will be asking autistic people who have had a breast cancer diagnosis and non-autistic people who have had a breast cancer diagnosis to take part so we can see if there are similarities or differences in their cancer experiences. We would like to know when it has gone well, when it has not gone well and what would have made things easier. The findings from the survey will feed into our guidelines for healthcare professionals to better support autistic patients and provide recommendations for autistic people who are currently receiving treatment for breast cancer. These guidelines and recommendations will be the culmination of findings from the three studies in the research project.
