'2nds Together' - Supporting Secondary Breast Cancer Patients

Living with a secondary breast cancer diagnosis is both mentally and physically cruelling for patients and those closest to them. During the current COVID-19 situation life is even more unpredictable.
Through the implementation of support specifically for secondary breast cancer patients and their families we aim to help patients to navigate some of the hurdles they face as a result of this time.
Working with medical professionals and through the provision of peer to peer support if required we can assist with joining 2nds Together in times of uncertainty.

'Tea & A Chat' - Supporting Secondary Breast Cancer Patients

The Leanne Pero Foundation and Black Women Rising was founded in 2017 by
multi award winning entrepreneur and Stage Three breast cancer survivor Leanne
Pero.
Black Women Rising was created to address the gaps in cancer support services for
Black cancer patients. Mainstream cancer services are not inclusive enough and do
not provide adequate support tailored to the Black and ethnic community. Similarly,
the community are not engaging with medical services which is leading to later
diagnosis and unnecessary deaths at a disproportionate level than women in other
groups.
Our monthly peer support groups are at the heart of our project. We also created the
first all-Black female cancer portrait exhibition which has toured London. We recently
launched our podcast and magazine.
All of this helps to fulfil our aims, which are to empower, raise awareness, promote

Breast Cancer Research Aid is an independent charity that supports innovative breast cancer research across the UK. Breast Friends & Family

Breast Friends and Family aims to support patients through a breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. To provide the little things that the NHS are not in a position to, little things that will make a difference to individual patients and how they feel about themselves.
The charity is currently working closely with the Breast Care Nurses in the Oncology Unit at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, to bring those little things to the patients who need them.
These currently include:
– Mastectomy bras for patients facing breast surgery
– Patient Bags including products to help ease the side effects of chemotherapy
– Axillary lymph node medical ID bands to assist patient care throughout treatment
– Cooling towels for patient experiencing menopausal symptoms through treatment
– Water bottles to encourage patients to keep hydrated
– Headscarfs and advice on hair loss through chemotherapy from our experienced volunteers

During chemotherapy, I qualified as a yoga nidra teacher in London and practiced and studied cutting edge breathing techniques with 2 very highly regarded and brilliant breathwork teachers in London. I have also been lucky enough train with Dr Richard Brown, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University, Dr Patricia Gerbarg, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College. I am proudly one of their Level 2 Breath-Body-Mind(TM) teachers. I am also currently a trainee hypnotherapist.
I now specialise in helping others with issues such as stress, anxiety, sleep and concentration. I would love to help others find a better balance in life and appreciate the power of their own breath. I will continue to study with influential and inspirational teachers and believe that our healing journey, possibly down a new magical path, can start right under our noses.

Drain Dollies

Before I went in for my surgery I searched high and low for surgical drain bags. I knew I was going to be discharged from hospital with these drains, how was I to manage? I knew I was going to have drains in for at least 12 days and didn't want to be house bound. Equally though I didn't want to get funny looks in the street or feel embarrassed.
Unfortunately hospitals do not readily give out things to contain the drains in for patients use and I saw ladies using plastic carrier bags and pillow cases. It is so inconvenient not having the use of your hands. There is no reason to be house bound after breast surgery by any means, these bags enable you to get out and about which will aid your recovery process. They also come in some really nice patterns and colours to give you that extra boost when your feeling lousy and not so good about yourself.

Resilience builds on neuroplasticity: the brain's ability to form new neural connections towards better mental and physical health.

The Osborne Trust

The Trust provides children aged 16 years and under whose parent/s have cancer access to recreational activities during a parent/s treatment by funding up to 3 activities such as a cinema trip, play centre visit or a meal out. Activities are supervised by an adult family member or friend. The aim is to offer the parent/s some rest and the children some time away from all that cancer entails.

Vicky is registered with the Yoga Alliance as a senior registered yoga teacher and teacher trainer, teaches at triyoga in Camden, Ealing and Chelsea, and Paul’s Cancer Support Centre. She is also teaches applied anatomy on Julie Montagu’s and Carolyn Cowan’s teacher training course and has an extensive private client base.
In 2013 Vicky studied with Laura Kupperman on her “Yoga for Survivors” teacher training course and is now teaching yoga to cancer patients at any stage of their recovery. The classes are designed to provide a safe refuge to come and practice yoga, to build strength, increase range of motion and reduce stress. The classes should help you sleep better, feel less fatigued and enjoy a better quality of life.
Vicky runs a Teaching Yoga To Those Diagnosed with Cancer training so that more teachers can feel supported to teach these wonderful and supportive classes.
