Counselling with Cancer

counsellingwithcancer.co.uk

Claire believes ‘Cancer Changes Everything Forever’ and it is so important to look after yourself Mentally, Emotionally and Physically whether you are the patient, the family or the friend.

Main issues cancer patients have when they come to you:
There are so many reasons clients come to me who have been affected by cancer, some are trying to come to terms with their cancer or diagnosis, or family members are looking for ways of supporting their families or trying to cope with the tragic news, friends are coming to terms with the news and wonder what to say or do, patients feel like they have lost their identity and want to be who they are and not the C word and then of course there is bereavement. Some of my clients are young adults that have been through their teenage years watching their parent be unwell and having to grow up very quickly and then coming to terms with their loss. Cancer is such a destructive disease it leaves a huge ripple effect through their families and friends. Cancer really does affect everyone and everything around them

Richmond's Hope

richmondshope.org.uk

Richmond’s Hope provides support for children and young people aged 4-18 years who have been bereaved. The charity provides a safe space for children to work through their grief both verbally and non verbally, to preserve memories of the person who died, to explore their feelings, to be given coping strategies and to understand the impact the bereavement has had on their lives.
As each child’s grief is different, we provide individual programmes of care for each child. Our dedicated team of bereavement workers support children on a one to one basis.
We are also passionate about educating individuals and groups about the language surrounding grief and offer training and interest visits. The training we offer to external organisations aims to raise awareness of young people’s grief and how it affects their lives.

Sea Change Retreats

seachangeretreats.org

Surf and wellbeing retreats supporting adults impacted by cancer, based in Newquay, Cornwall.

Our vision is to offer adults impacted by cancer, and their carers, a unique opportunity to strengthen their minds and bodies. Driven by research and consultation with cancer survivors, professionals in the field of oncology and clinical psychology, each element of the retreats aims to support wellbeing and recovery.

Set on the stunning Cornish coast where the ocean itself brings a sense of calm, participants are able to take time out for themselves, as well as connecting with others with similar experiences.
Founded by Dr Helen Reynolds, Clinical Psychologist, Dr Bhavna Oza, NHS Doctor and Dannie MacLennan, Project Coordinator, SeaChange Retreats bring together their passion for wellbeing, the ocean, and research-driven interventions.
All of the retreats are built around four key elements – surfing, yoga, mindfulness, and specialist workshops. Together these elements aim to strengthen and promote physical wellbeing and activity; develop emotional resilience and mental health; and build connections with others who share similar experiences.

The BRIC Centre

briccentre.bbk.ac.uk

BRiC's research aims to reduce anxiety and depressive vulnerability in women with a breast cancer diagnosis and improve quality of life using evidence-based translational neuroscience research. It's main aim is to build resilience.
Resilience is the practice of adaptation, flexibility, and adjustment. When confronted with a life-threatening disease such as breast cancer, options become limited, priorities change, and we struggle to find our new 'normal'. Practicing resilience can help us endure the emotional roller coasters, and manage our emotions more efficiently. Resilience builds on neuroplasticity: the brain's ability to form new neural connections towards better mental and physical health.
