Black Women Rising
blackwomenrisinguk.orgThe Leanne Pero Foundation and Black Women Rising was founded in 2017 by
multi award winning entrepreneur and Stage Three breast cancer survivor Leanne
Pero.
Black Women Rising was created to address the gaps in cancer support services for
Black cancer patients. Mainstream cancer services are not inclusive enough and do
not provide adequate support tailored to the Black and ethnic community. Similarly,
the community are not engaging with medical services which is leading to later
diagnosis and unnecessary deaths at a disproportionate level than women in other
groups.
Our monthly peer support groups are at the heart of our project. We also created the
first all-Black female cancer portrait exhibition which has toured London. We recently
launched our podcast and magazine.
All of this helps to fulfil our aims, which are to empower, raise awareness, promote
wellness within our community and ultimately save lives.

Bosom Friends (Bradford)
Bradford / facebook.com
Bosom Friends is Bradford’s self help and support group for women who are living with or beyond breast cancer. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Cancer Support Centre on Smith Lane. The meetings are friendly social events, an opportunity to chat over a cup of tea with other women who have experienced breast cancer. Much of the emphasis is about getting on with life with or after cancer and the content of the evening meeting varies from talks from guest speakers from the medical team, to quizzes, jewellery parties and other fun activities. We hold our annual Fashion Show in October which is always an amazing occasion for women who have/had breast cancer to strut their stuff looking great and feeling fabulous. We have our Pink Tombola at the Baildon Gala in July and hold a Family Christmas party in December. Bosom Friends is a registered charity and we rely entirely on fund raising and voluntary donations. Funds raised are used in a number of ways to benefit women being treated in Bradford, either on an individual basis or to all Bradford women; for example we are recently helped make the Dales Suite at St Luke’s Hospital a pleasant and welcoming place by providing a coffee machine and we have funded a spectacular art display. If you would like more information about Bosom Friends, the meetings or feel you would just like to talk on a one to one basis with someone who has been through the same experience as yourself, please contact us through our Facebook page.

Counselling with Cancer
counsellingwithcancer.co.ukClaire believes ‘Cancer Changes Everything Forever’ and it is so important to look after yourself Mentally, Emotionally and Physically whether you are the patient, the family or the friend.
Main issues cancer patients have when they come to you:
There are so many reasons clients come to me who have been affected by cancer, some are trying to come to terms with their cancer or diagnosis, or family members are looking for ways of supporting their families or trying to cope with the tragic news, friends are coming to terms with the news and wonder what to say or do, patients feel like they have lost their identity and want to be who they are and not the C word and then of course there is bereavement. Some of my clients are young adults that have been through their teenage years watching their parent be unwell and having to grow up very quickly and then coming to terms with their loss. Cancer is such a destructive disease it leaves a huge ripple effect through their families and friends. Cancer really does affect everyone and everything around them

From Me To You
frommetoyouletters.co.ukSomething as simple as receiving a letter can make the world of difference to a friend or family member suffering from cancer.
We all too often hear that emotional support disappears as patients embark on surgery and treatment, as those close to them just don’t know what to say or how to communicate.
It’s only the cost of a stamp but the effect on the person receiving your letter will be immeasurable.

Leanne Pero Foundation
theleanneperofoundation.comThe Leanne Pero Foundation and Black Women Rising was founded in 2017 by
multi award winning entrepreneur and Stage Three breast cancer survivor Leanne

Living with cancer can be tough on your finances. You might not be able to earn in the same way. You’ll probably spend more on everyday costs like heating and getting around. And it’s hard knowing how to plan ahead. Too often, money worries just get out of control. But we’re here to help. Our benefits advisers can support you by working out the financial help you may be entitled to and helping you to access it. They have specialist knowledge of welfare benefits, tax credits and grants and can offer you up-to-date, invaluable advice. Working in partnership with Citizens Advice Birmingham, we provide free face-to-face benefits advice to people affected by cancer, including carers and families, at hospitals and other locations across Birmingham and Solihull. We can provide advice on what benefits you could claim if you cannot work, if you are experiencing health problems as a result of treatment, or if you have a low or reduced income; help you with applications for benefit – making calls or filling in forms; help you apply for one-off grants, eg to help with fuel costs, to pay for a convalescent holiday or a new household item; assist you with appealing against decisions on your benefit entitlement; refer you to other support with debt, housing, employment and pensions. We also offer face to face and telephone appointments.
